A few practical things that make a trip around Romania easier.
A car gives you the most freedom. Trains link the main cities, but many villages have no station and buses are rare at weekends.
Cars driving on national roads need an electronic vignette (rovinieta). Buy it online or at a petrol station before you set off.
Cards work in cities, supermarkets and petrol stations. Keep some lei in cash for village guesthouses, markets and parking.
The Transfăgărășan and the Transalpina are closed in the cold months and usually open only from early summer to autumn.
Brown bears live in the Carpathians. Never feed them, keep food indoors and follow local advice on hiking trails.
A pensiune breakfast is often home-made: eggs, cheese, cured meats, jam and fresh bread. Ask when booking if it is included.
